Info

About Root Project
a nonprofit powered by a very profitable cryptocurrency
Laborless Crowdfunding
A new crowdfunding model creates supply and demand for community projects. Project initiators don't need to complete the project or know anything about cryptocurrencies. Donors get tax deductions. Socially visible projects enhance reputations.
Cryptocurrency
A portion of a project's crowdfunded proceeds go to token purchases, driving currency demand. The rest goes to material, one supervisor's wages, and wages for those stuck in poverty to complete the project. The currency's supply is hard capped, so each project reduces liquid token supply.
'Pension' Fund and Interest Alignment
In addition to hourly wages, paid in USD, cryptocurrency worth half of the day's earnings is deposited into a medium-term pension fund-like entity - further reducing liquid token supply and aligning the interests of investors and society's most vulnerable.

Root Project is Hiring a Community Manager in Seoul

Using a blockchain infrastructure, RootProject brings the power of markets to non-profit fundraising. By breaking down the barriers between donor, investor and project managers, our unique POE (Proof of Ecosystem) campaign process allows all of these stakeholders to build real solutions together, from beginning to end.

The Lagos Campaign: Blockchain Education in Nigeria

RootProject is partnering with ParallelScore to raise funds to develop a blockchain school in Lagos, Nigeria. 20 local students will receive full-tuition scholarships to attend the first course, slated to begin in spring of 2019.

The global demand for blockchain developers has grown rapidly in recent years. The inherently decentralized nature of the industry means that the economic geography of the new internet can benefit Africa in ways few industries before could — if the right educational opportunities are created.

CEO Adebayo Dawodu aims to engage with strategic partners and guest lecturers to create a curriculum for blockchain education to address the increasing demand for developers skilled in this emerging technology and provide opportunities for job-seekers in Lagos.

ParallelScore understands that developers must be equipped for the inevitable demands of technological advancements. Currently, we train, mobilize, and deploy talent to create innovative solutions to global challenges through the use of emerging technologies. Our developers are creating products that, 1) lift the barriers preventing access to health care, 2) simplify the phases of agriculture using low-power and cost-effective technology, and 3) facilitate engagement among community members to achieve a better quality of life. This blockchain school is a step in the direction of ParallelScore’s purpose of creating thousands of jobs in Nigeria, which it hopes will permeate through other countries in Africa.

— Adebayo Dawodu, CEO of ParallelScore

The funds raised through the campaign will be used to develop the curriculum in real time over the next several months. Coursework will begin in Q2 of 2019. A portion of the funds raised will also be used for scholarships and equipment for 20 students, who we’ll begin recruiting during the course of the campaign this fall.

“It has long been a goal among leaders of the industry to build the new internet,” said RootProject cofounder Dr. Judge, “in a way that begins to change the world’s currently-horribly geographically concentrated distribution of wealth. We’re proud to be taking action, not just talking about it.”

As ParallelScore has always been committed to living at the cutting edge of emerging technology, the addition of blockchain course offerings is a natural extension for the studio which already has a waiting list of students eager to enroll.

Stay tuned for more on how to support the campaign in the coming weeks.

The Caraga Campaign

The Caraga Campaign

RootProject and Global Partnership for Sustainable Solutions (GPSS) are exploring an innovative, blockchain-powered funding initiative for urgently needed reforestation on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.

Less than 3% of primary forest cover remains in the Philippines

The successful implementation of the GPSS reforestation project upon funding will help restore micro-climate balance to reduce severe weather, erosion, and other climate-related problems resulting from deforestation. The program will also provide the indigenous people who own the forests with generations of sustainable income. Finally, the GPSS program will create a powerful new funding strategy and mechanism for reforestation projects around the world.

“Economic and environmental experts had approached us to create an eco-credit model for reforestation that produced real financial returns, thus making eco-credits into marketable investments, not simply options for small donor-driven funds. To make this work, we needed a partner with a large-scale, fully developed reforestation program. We were exceptionally lucky to find GPSS, a company that had already put years of on-the-ground research, development and planning in place for a large-scale reforestation project in Mindanao,” states Dr. Nicholas Adams Judge, a political economist and CEO, RootProject.

The Caraga region hosts one of the last surviving regions of rainforest cover in the Philippines. Today, less than 3% of primary forest cover remains in the Philippines, resulting in changes to climate, rain patterns, flash flooding, water siltation, and soil erosion that have harmed agricultural practices and food security. This massive loss of forest cover has had approximately a 40% decrease in the productivity of the land over the last 30 years. For example, cropping cycles per year for corn and palay have been reduced from three cycles to two, with the second crop often depleted or failing due to the lack of rain. The reduction in harvests has increased the rate of poverty and malnutrition among the indigenous people. The Mindanao campaign will launch the initial stage of GPSS’s scalable plan to reforest more than 250,000 acres of certified indigenous land (Certificates of Ancestral Domain Titles — CADT’s).

Specifically, the funds raised will support the creation of a plantation of lauan (Philippine mahogany) and the following social and environmental benefits:

Create long-term employment for indigenous people that creates sustainable income and rising quality of life;

Provide hands-on job-skills training for indigenous people;

Educate foresters to help restore the microclimate that benefits food production;

Create multi-stakeholders along the supply-chain to build indigenous cluster industries that strengthen and empower indigenous communities;

Contribute to the promotion of sustainable peace and development; and

Large scale reforestation with sustainable plantations of multiple wood species, while incorporating small shareholder farms using Sloping Agriculture Land Technology.

Solving Urgent Problems: About the Project

The GPSS-RootProject Reforestation Initiative has been designed to rehabilitate, protect and preserve the CADT’s located in the Caraga Region. Together, our aim is to facilitate three core objectives:

Rehabilitation of the ecosystem;

Restoration of the micro-climate; and

Sustainable livelihood development for the indigenous people who inhabit these sacred lands.

The GPSS development plan for Caraga is designed to benefit the poor land-holding indigenous people as joint venture partners, along with global investors and business partners. Our goal is to facilitate shared value economic developments that provide the indigenous people with a sustainable, growing economy with global markets, while also addressing needs in education, cultural preservation, and health care. Working holistically, GPSS and the indigenous people are creating a new global standard for comprehensive economic, environmental, social development.

The GPSS-RootProject reforestation initiative offers investors an unprecedented opportunity for significant, positive environmental impact coupled with sustainable economic development benefitting indigenous people.

About Caraga

The Caraga Region, located on the northeastern portion of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, is among the top regions poised for significant economic growth in the booming Asia-Pacific economic zone. With its undeveloped natural resources and vast, contiguous land, the region offers tremendous opportunities to unleash new wealth and reduce poverty. In fact, a recent report published by the World Bank, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) states that “unlocking Mindanao’s potential is critical in bringing down poverty in the entire country.”

The region, designated as Administrative Region 13 by the Philippine government, is sub-divided into 5 provinces: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, the Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur. As a result of IPRA Law, the land in these provinces have been legally organized in contiguous tracts of land owned and recognized by the indigenous tribes on behalf of the people.

About Global Partnership for Sustainable Solutions

GPSS is an international development corporation that brings socially and environmentally responsible companies, institutions, and investors together into emerging markets for scalable, sustainable, shared value development. GPSS bring the world’s best practices, technologies, and innovations to developing regions to optimize economic impact linked with positive social, environmental, and governance benefits. GPSS works holistically with the local people in developing regions to create new models for sustainable development in which the local people are economic partners benefiting with global investors and businesses in the creation of new industries and markets.

About RootProject

RootProject applies blockchain technology to crowdfunding in order to change the way we fund the things we care about most. This means that we leverage the power of smart contracts to collect zero fees on the crowdfunding campaigns that RootProject supports. Instead of collecting a typical crowdfunding fee, a percentage of funds raised purchases ROOTS tokens on the open market, thus driving the price up. We call this the currency-as-fee model. By locking our ROOTS tokens away for just a year or two, we are able to return all funds to our partner organizations and partner projects so all of your contribution is going directly to the nonprofit organization and not to administrative fees.

About Global Action Platform

Global Action Platform is the leading international university-business alliance advancing scalable, sustainable solutions for abundant food, health, and prosperity. We serve as the exclusive NGO development partner for GPSS to align philanthropic and social impact investments with GPSS commercial investments in developing regions. Through our programs, Global Action Platform mobilizes and inform cross-sector leaders, direct investments into transformative businesses, leverage technology for analytics and collaboration, and communicate findings through global publications and media.

RootProject’s fourth campaign is complete!

We are pleased to announce that the Numi Tea campaign is funded!

Over the weekend, we met our goal of $19,363.00. The funds contributed will support the implementation of a summer school program in 2019 modelled after the successful pilot that launched in 2018.

About the Pilot:

This summer, 25 sixth graders — mostly orphans and war victims in danger of dropping out of school in the Karkh district of Baghdad — participated in an 8-week long summer school program piloted by the Numi Foundation and Iraq Foundation. The idea for the program began ten years ago, when the CEO of Numi Tea, Ahmed Rahim, a Baghdad native, co-founded the Foundation with the aim of bringing art, gardening, and nature to at-risk children.

After decades of conflict left one in six Iraqi children orphaned and lacking basic education, Rahim was determined to make this idea a reality. “Education is a cornerstone for thriving, healthy, and peaceful communities, and we are grateful to have been able to collaborate with so many incredible leaders, supporters, and partners in this effort to empower children with educational programs” Rahim said.

During the 8-week program students participated in a mix of educational and cultural activities, with a focus on art enrichment, including a field trip to the national museum in Baghdad where students were given a guided tour with one of the curators. “They’d never had anything like this experience before and were so happy,” said Ms. Amina Mohammad, who is overseeing the program on behalf of the Iraq Foundation.

A Day at the National Museum in Baghdad

Students also attended a children’s festival titled “Let’s Write in Baghdad,” in which they were encouraged to write and illustrate their own stories and perform short plays. “The students enjoyed this activity so much,” said Ms. Mohammad, ‘it was both fun and educational for everyone.”

On the final day of the program, the students hosted a celebration attended by parents, teachers, local officials, and even the most popular Iraqi educational TV channel. Students showcased their artwork and talents. According to Rahim, “It was a really special day that confirmed we are on the right track with this program. And now with news of these campaigns funds, we are excited to get started on planning for next summer!”

Students at the Final Day Celebration on September 8th, 2018

Parents with children that did not make it into the program in 2018 were so happy with the program, they asked for its expansion to include more students in 2019, said Rend al-Rahim, Director of the Iraq Foundation.

“With the announcement of this successful campaign, we are thrilled to be able to tell students, parents, and teachers that we will be able to build off of this year’s success and expand the program next summer. We are hopeful that with this vote of confidence from the community, we can raise more awareness around the need for educational support for orphans and war victims and ultimately reach more children in more schools. This successful partnership with RootProject gives us a really strong foundation on which to build.” said Darian Rodriguez Heyman, Executive Director of Numi Foundation.

To assess the effectiveness of the pilot, at the end of the academic program, subject matter tests were administered, and according to staff, the students scored much better than they did during the school year and the teachers were very pleased with the results.

Said Rahim, “We are so grateful for this partnership with RootProject. Thank you, on behalf of Numi Tea, the Iraq Foundation, and all the students and teachers who learned so much this summer.”

Updates to RootProject’s Korean Language Website are now Live

RootProject’s pilot city expansion will begin in Q4, beginning in Seoul, South Korea and New York City.

We’re happy to announce that our new Korean language site is now live. Heeding the advice of our local partners, we switched up the design of the Korean site during the ICO. Now, having brought on additional staff in Seoul to assist, in part, with translation, we’ve built the two sites and a workflow that will keep both aligned going forward.

This is just one more small step toward launching our pilot city programs, and coincides nicely with our now-regular Git updates (check out our most recent RootShop post if you haven’t already): The tech necessary to launch the pilot city program is starting — after focusing on hiring and org-level build — to come together.

In RootProject campaign news, the Numi Campaign has less than 40 days to go and still has a way to go to reach our goal. If you haven’t you haven’t shared, posted, or most importantly donated you can do that here.

Look for more updates to both sites soon — we’re adding new features as we prepare for several more campaign launches in the coming weeks.

Crowdfunding Forks

Crowdfunding Forks

Proposing a New Type of Crowdfunding

The Background Story

Over the past year, Christopher Heymann and I have been discussing how to spread the economic benefits of the new internet to sub-Saharan Africa. Blockchain as an industry first grew precisely where venture capital networks were weak. Add to that the inherently decentralized nature of our work, and the power of our industry’s economic geography starts to feel like a sleeping giant.

Whether that matters or not will be determined by what early movers in the industry actually do, not what they hope will happen.

Christopher emphasized that a blockchain school located in sub-Saharan Africa was vital. Developer talent is a great source of scarcity in blockchain right now, with the going rate for a Solidity developer in the Valley being $200/hr.

The first step for getting a great school off the ground would be finding excellent local partners. Adebayo Dawodu, Fabian Volgesteller, and I were having a casual dinner a few months ago. Adebayo has run a dev studio in Lagos, Nigeria for some time. Fabian is the creator of the ERC-20 standard.

Midway through the dinner, the conversation turned to early 90s coding nostalgia. Now, I have written more than my fair share of code. But I didn’t start as a child, and nothing like Fabian and Adebayo. As they went down that rabbit hole, it occurred to me that Adebayo would be the perfect partner for the blockchain school.

Adebayo was excited about building a blockchain school alongside his existing dev studio. With the perfect partner in place, creating the course material and designing the crowdfunding campaign were the next steps. And that leads us to where we are now.

The Problem

We are well-positioned for two powerful reasons: Demand for blockchain developers is at an all-time high; and many of the best developers in the community are exceptionally generous with their time and talents. So, the question becomes: How do we channel these two ingredients into a crowdfunding campaign that creates not a tiny, feel-good program, but an institution that makes an impact on Nigeria’s economic geography?

RootProject’s slogan is “Political Economy Applied to the Blockchain.” One focus of political economy is the construction of incentive structures that channel people’s material self-interest into socially beneficial outcomes. Hope and goodwill are not our main building blocks — new, sustainable economic systems are.

The most important source of scarcity for many blockchains — and projects building on those blockchains — is not one of funding, but of developer talent focused on their ecosystem. So, it seems likely we could convince one of these blockchains to back our new dev school by offering to tailor the course material to their language or ecosystem.

Ideally, however, developers would have choices in courses dictated by the intellectual substance of blockchain as a topic, not by funding constraints. If EOS worked best for what interested one student, she should be able to follow that course. If Ethereum worked best for another, then the student should dive deeper into Solidity instead of studying secondary blockchains.

So, how do we design a crowdfunding campaign that is powered in part by the material interests of powerful blockchain firms, but that does not distort course material? We’re calling the answer crowdfunding forks, and it is a key part of a more decentralized, more crypto-powered version of the traditional crowdfunding model that RootProject has promised to put forth.

Crowdfunding Forks

If a group is interested in some particular part of a program, there likely is some donation threshold at which it would make sense that for the central project implementors to tailor program implementation to fit donor concern. Looking at the economics of Adebayo’s studio, for instance, if a blockchain firm donated roughly $25,000, we would be willing to reserve a certain number of slots in the blockchain school for students that elect to take a course on that blockchain.

In essence, we are forking the variable part of program implementation; in our example, course curricula. That fork requires agreement between the central project implementors and the donors that would like to see a new node — though one could imagine a more decentralized alternative where certain implementation alternatives are structured and automated.

That fork could continue down to a new child node. For instance, if Consensys met the minimal donation threshold for a more advanced smart contract development course based in Solidity, and then Gnosis wanted modules pertaining to its platform, it could meet a similar or different donation threshold.

Taken by themselves, crowdfunding forks could be caricatured as a more complex version of rewards-based crowdfunding. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as rewards-based crowdfunding has proven to be a powerful fundraising innovation.

Crowdfunding forks are just one part of a larger vision — one that decentralizes not just funding — like crowdfunding already has — but program implementation.

Token Curated Registries and Program Implementation

Another innovation involves not fundraising, but program implementation. For example, donors can be given a small amount of ROOTS tokens proportional to the amount they donate to a campaign, deposited in a special wallet. In the example of the blockchain dev school, if someone donated one percent of a campaign’s budget, their tokens would give them one percent of the voting rights that can govern the program in the real world. For instance, vetting grant applications among developers for the dev school.

Tokens with voting rights could be mixed with past students or program administrators over the years, to increase the knowledge base of those voting.

Summing Up

Taken together, these innovations and applications of preexisting crypto design add up to a recipe for decentralizing crowdfunding and program governance. In the real world, the design of these systems will be difficult. We will have to be careful, experimenting, iterating and testing new program governance mechanisms along the way.

The result of successfully learning, however, is a recipe for a new form of decentralized real-world governance, through the whole life cycle of an organized project, from project inception, to funding — which is where crowdfunding currently stops — all the way through to program implementation. By decentralizing the latter, the material interests of funders can be more closely aligned, creating more powerful fundraising for causes that otherwise would receive only small donations.

The end goal is robustly funded real-world programs that are radically decentralized and designed in a way that replicates the efficiency of heirarchical organizations (corporations) without the heirarchy.

RootProject Helping Numi Foundation Raise Funds for Iraqi Children

RootProject Helping Numi Foundation Raise Funds for Iraqi Children

RootProject is partnering with the Numi Foundation to raise funds for a summer school pilot program for sixth-grade students in the Karkh District of Baghdad, Iraq. The students who stand to benefit from the summer program have been identified by the Iraq Foundation, the Ministry of Education and local school authorities as being in danger of dropping out of school. The summer school program will provide targeted support for students who have fallen behind in their studies in order to get them back on track to graduation by addressing achievement gaps.

Ahmed Rahim is the CEO of Numi Tea and a Baghdad native, with family still living in Baghdad. Ten years ago, he co-founded the Numi Foundation with the aim of bringing art, gardening, and nature to local children. Decades of conflict have left one in six Iraqi children orphaned and lacking basic education. “Education is a cornerstone for thriving, healthy, and peaceful communities, and we’re excited to collaborate with so many incredible leaders, supporters, and partners in this effort to empower children with educational programs” Rahim recently said. “We are overjoyed that we’re finally able to implement our founding vision of bringing education programs to children who are victims of war in Iraq.”

We are proud to implement this pilot program in partnership with Numi and the Iraq Foundation on the tenth anniversary of setting this vision and goal.

You can help by clicking here. Please donate & share.

About the program:

The 8-week summer school program will include class three times a week and be held in July and August, including four core academic subjects: math, science, English, and art.

The art curriculum, which will be organized by Khalid Jaber, who has hosted a children’s art program on television for many years, is designed to provide a creative outlet for the students. The program will include one trip to the Baghdad Museum and another to the Babil Ruins, so students can experience the famous archeological site first hand. For these youth, the field trips will be a fun, rewarding opportunity to which they’d otherwise not have access. Donated funds will be directed toward teacher stipends, materials, field trip expenses, general building operating expenses, and a showcase event at the end of the 8-week period.

The budget needed to provide 25 students access to summer school programming is just over $19,000. Donations above that amount will go toward additional programs for low-income children in Baghdad. Additional funds now will expedit how quickly we can scale and improve the program for more children in future years.

This pilot is made possible by a partnership between the Numi Foundation and the Iraq Foundation, which is spearheaded by Ms. Rend Al-Rahim, President of the Iraq Foundation and former ambassador of Iraq to the United States. Please donate now to support this critical, peace-building initiative.

About the Numi Foundation:

Numi Foundation’s mission is to nurture and empower thriving communities. Numi envisions a world where all basic human needs are met and people have the resources to fulfill their greatest potential.

In addition to the summer school program, Numi Foundation provides their organic, fair trade farming communities around the world with access to clean, safe drinking water. And in their backyard in Oakland, California they offer experiential gardening, arts and social studies curricula to low-income K-6 public schools.

RootProject completes campaign with Tech Goes Home

RootProject is excited to announce that we have raised $5,231 for Tech Goes Home. Tech Goes Home (TGH), based in Boston, MA, is a national award-winning initiative empowering communities to access and use digital tools to overcome barriers and advance lives. TGH is one of the first nonprofits RootProject partnered with from the pre-ICO.

One of TGH’s goals is to increase economic self-sufficiency by equipping homeless people and those at risk of homelessness with skills to move towards economic stability, enabling them to overcome barriers to employment and encouraging sustained employment. TGH responds to the needs of homeless families, particularly young homeless families, that require intensive support to develop the skills to move away from homelessness permanently.

TGH partners with homeless shelters to provide families 15 hours of hands-on internet skills training, with a qualified trainer from a local shelter, through which people explore a web-based curriculum and step-by-step tutorials designed to help them learn to navigate and use the Internet to improve everyday life. Tutorials focus on topics such as helping find low-cost housing, how to sign up for the SNAP Food Stamps program, and how to take advantage of free resources to create a resume and search for jobs online. Participants also receive help signing up for discounted high-speed Internet, as well as free online Rosetta Stone subscriptions for improving English skills. Upon program completion, they are given the option to purchase a new computer for $50. TGH has graduated more than 25,000 people and distributed more than 15,000 new computers.

RootProject’s mission is to unlock the power of blockchain and crowdfunding to assist communities and nonprofits in making real change. The work of TGH does just that. We are excited to be a part of using innovative technology for social good and to impact important issues such as homelessness.

With $5,231 raised with RootProject, TGH will be able to continue their work providing homeless and unsheltered families receive computes, internet access and training needed for kids to be successful in school and adults to find jobs.

RootProject is gaining momentum having now funded three campaigns. As we continue to expand the scope and volume of our crowdfunding efforts, get ready to see even more from RootProject.

RootProject Completes Second Fundraiser in Four Weeks

We are excited to announce that as of today, RootProject distributed $3,673 in funds raised for CYCLE Kids, marking the completion of our second funded program in the last four weeks.

CYCLE Kids is committed to strengthening the emotional and physical health of children by teaching them the skills necessary to lead active and healthy lifestyles through riding bikes. CYCLE Kids’ goal is to help children living in urban, rural and native American communities whose lives are challenged by poverty. Children living in communities with high unemployment and widespread poverty often face emotional issues that stem from social isolation, low self-confidence and a weak support system, not to mention poor nutritional habits. Programs like CYCLE Kids help build self-esteem while also providing a healthy exercise outlet. They believe that the simple and captivating skill of riding a bike changes lives. CYCLE Kids operates in 11 states and the Navajo Nation in Arizona. The funds RootProject raised will purchase new bikes, helmets and bike locks. With CYCLE Kids local partners on the ground, these supplies will go far in helping create a positive future for many children.

Julianne Idlet, the Founder and Executive Director of CYCLE Kids said: “We are excited to be able to work with RootProject to adapt new approaches to crowdfunding and awareness building to our work. This is a new tool in our toolbox and, if we keep growing like this, we can impact thousands of more children before long.”

What drew RootProject to CYCLE Kids was the important work they do not only helping kids with their confidence but also combating disease such as childhood obesity, hypertension and diabetes. CYCLE Kids works to keep young people feeling confident, healthy and happy no matter what their home life may be.

“Cycle Kids was our first nonprofit partner and our very first nonprofit campaign, back when RootProject’s pre-ICO had just ended, and 99% of people had never heard the words ‘crypto’ or ‘blockchain.’,” said RootProject founder and CEO, Nicholas Judge. “The ICO having ended less than three months ago and hiring and tech build now in full swing. It feels so exciting to start doing real, tangible good while, we’re building the tech to scale that good by orders of magnitude. Cycle Kids is a great program, and will always have a special place in our hearts and RootProject’s founding.”

We started RootProject to use the power of blockchain, impact investing and crowdfunding for social good. We are excited that we get to be part of the solution and collaborate with non-profits such as CYCLE Kids to help with some of society’s most pressing issues.

With our second project funded, momentum is building.
